Beowulf and Fate

 

Foreshadowing:  The presentation of material in a work in such a way that later events are prepared for.

 

Elegy: a sustained and formal poem setting forth serious meditations on death or another solemn theme.

  • Spring does not appear in British literature until Chaucer.
  • World is without peace; it is cruel, fallen, and less (since the loss of Rome).
  • The poem is objective; it reflects the viewpoint of a community not a single poet.

 

Undefeated Will: Tolkien’s term for the warrior’s resolve to continue the battle despite an obvious and deadly.   “He is a man, and that for him and many is sufficient tragedy.”

  • value of piety that treasures man’s struggle in the dark past, man fallen and not yet saved, disgraced but not dethroned.”
  • The wages of heroism is death.
