BATTLE FOR NORMANDY, 1944

PURPOSE

Command and American squad or platoon in a assault on Germany positions in a French village in the Cotentin Peninsula, 1944. View combat from the vantage point of lieutenant, sergeants, and privates. This project immerses students in the tactics of WWII through wargamming. Students move and fire 25mm hand-painted figures on a ping-pong sized terrain board.

REQUIREMENTS

Students fight a battle for 4 hours then write a 8-page report. After a (1) brief introduction, the paper will divide into into three sections:

In the second part, discuss what happened in the game. Recount the battle. You might examine some of these questions too:

  • What kind of command challenges did you experience?
  • What effects did your weapon systems achieve?
  • What roll does terrain play in movement, fire, and communication?
 
   
4. Conclusion. Is combat an art or a science? What can gaming tell us about real combat. What can't a game reproduce?
