Making A Flute
Home Quiz:Making Flute Glossary

A 20 cm. length of half-inch outer diameter PVC pipe produces the note A4, which may be considered as the fundamental note. By cutting the 20 cm. pipe in half, the first harmonic, A5, is produced. By cutting the 20 cm. pipe in thirds, the second harmonic,E5, is produced.

Based on this information, determine the lengths of pipe needed for the rest of the notes by finding the relationship between y, the frequency of a note and x, the length of the PVC pipe in centimeters that produces the note.  Watch the video to learn how to make your own flute. The pipes may be glued to a piece of wood, such as balsa wood or Popsicle sticks to finish the flute. (Lashing the pipes to the wood with dental floss is also an option.)
